Abstract
This study investigates the social factors influencing the mental health of undergraduate students at Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano. Mental health is an essential component of students' well-being and academic performance, yet it is frequently impacted by a complex interplay of social dynamics within and beyond the academic environment. Given the unique social pressures faced by university students, such as academic workload, social expectations, peer relationships, and economic challenges, it is critical to understand how these factors collectively shape their mental health. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to capture a broad and nuanced view of students' experiences. A sample of undergraduate students from various faculties provided insights into the prevalence of mental health concerns, such as anxiety, depression, and stress, as well as the specific social factors contributing to these conditions. Key factors explored included the role of peer support, family background, financial stress, and the impact of academic pressures. Additionally, the study examined how social media usage and relationships with faculty influence students' mental health, highlighting both supportive and challenging elements. Findings reveal that financial insecurity, limited access to mental health support, and high academic expectations are among the most significant stressors. Peer relationships and family support emerged as critical protective factors, offering a buffer against stress and improving resilience. However, students also reported that stigmatization of mental health issues often discouraged them from seeking help. This study underscores the importance of fostering a supportive academic environment that addresses students' social needs alongside their academic requirements. It suggests that targeted interventions, such as counseling services, financial support programs, and mental health awareness campaigns, could significantly improve students' mental well-being. By highlighting the social determinants of mental health in the university context, this research provides actionable insights for educators, policymakers, and mental health professionals to create a more supportive educational experience that promotes both academic success and personal well-being.
