Abstract
The antimicrobial potential of Aspergillus terreus isolated from the mangrove plant in the Deltaic region of the Nigeria Niger Delta stored in the sample culture collection of Mycology unit, Department of Botany was evaluated. The fungal culture was cultivated in Potato Dextrose Broth (PDB) to obtain the broth extract. The extract was evaluated for it's antimicrobial activity against clinical samples of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli by the disc method and the determination of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) by the tube method. The extract presented inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli with the diameter of clear zone of 20mm, 20mm and 15mm, 17mm respectively. Using the tube method, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) depicted turbid growth at lower concentration of the study samples i.e 0.25mg/ml, 0.325mg/ml, 0.125mg/ml, 0.0625mg/ml and 0.03125mg/ml for both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of the various concentrations of Aspergillus terreus extract on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli depicted growth in all cases after 24hours. This result shows that the extract had limited effect on the bacterial isolates tested and further research work is recommended under characteristic optimization conditions.
