Strategies for Improving English Teachers’ Professional Performance in Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study investigated the Strategic for improving teachers’ professional performance in Enugu North L.G.A. Four research questions guided the study. The study employed the descriptive survey research design. The population and sample of this study comprised of all the English Language teachers from the 11 public secondary schools in Enugu North L.G.A. The self-structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Data collected for research questions were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean. The results showed that teachers have positive perception as regards to the items listed in the strategies for enhancing effective English teacher professional performance in Enugu North Local Government Area; teachers perceive programmes like seminar, conferences and workshops, enhance teachers’ personal academic and professional growth; government regular payment of salaries to the teachers enhances learning by motivating the teachers to perform better; and, if entry into the teaching profession is regulated, as is done in other professions, the professional performance of teachers will improve. Based on the findings of the study, implications of the findings were noted, recommendation and suggestions for further studies were made.
