Abstract
ABSTRACTDependency and underdevelopment remain pivotal challenges in Africa, shaping the continent's socio-economic and political landscape. This research investigates the complex relationship between dependency and underdevelopment in Africa, with a focus on understanding the structural causes, manifestations, and implications of this dynamic. Drawing on World-Systems Theory, the study examines how historical legacies such as colonialism, unequal trade relations, and global economic policies have entrenched Africa's peripheral position in the global economy. Using a quantitative research design, 400 questionnaires were administered to diverse respondents across Africa, capturing insights into the factors contributing to dependency and underdevelopment. The findings highlight key issues such as reliance on foreign aid, trade imbalances, debt obligations, and the exploitative practices of multinational corporations, which collectively impede sustainable development. Poor governance, corruption, and political instability were identified as significant internal contributors to underdevelopment. The study emphasizes the need for strategic interventions, including economic diversification, investment in education and infrastructure, and regional cooperation to foster self-reliance and sustainable growth. It advocates for reforming global economic policies and promoting fair trade practices to address structural inequalities. By addressing the root causes of dependency and underdevelopment, Africa can unlock its potential and achieve equitable development. This research offers valuable insights and actionable recommendations for policymakers, scholars, and development practitioners committed to transforming Africa's development trajectory.
