Abstract
ABSTRACT Microbiology and physico-chemical properties of Oku stream in Uyo metropolis was investigated using standard procedures, inoculation, isolation and characterization method. Results obtained revealed the mean of total bacterial counts ranged from 4.68 to 6.44 x 10⁵ cfu/ml, while total fungal count ranged from 5.92 to 6.09 x 10⁵ cfu/ml. The bacterial isolates identified were Proteus vulgaris, Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella aerugenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Citrobacter freundii, Salmonella enterica, Vibrio cholerae, while the fungal isolates were Aspergillus niger, Penicillium sp, Fusarium sp. The Physico-Chemical Properties analyzed for includes temperature which was 28oC, pH was 6.42, chloride content was 1.66mg/l, sodium content was 0.03mg/l, phosphate 0.68mg/l, sulphate 0.05mg/l, total dissolved solids 0.05mg/l, total suspended solids 0.03mg/l biological oxygen demand 3.0mg/l and conductivity at 0.31mg/l. Study findings indicate that the stream water is inhabited by different microbial species that can cause illness to humans if consumed without proper treatmen
