Abstract
ABSTRACT This study evaluates the quality of rainwater harvested for domestic and agricultural use in, Osun State, Nigeria. Rainwater samples were collected from three locations (Ikirun, Ladoja, and the Faculty of Science, Osun State Polytechnic) and analyzed for physicochemical and bacteriological parameters. The results showed that while the water had clear appearance, neutral pH (7.20–7.60), and low hardness, significant concerns were identified. Elevated turbidity (44–56 FTU), high chromium levels (2.00–2.05 mg/L), and microbial contamination (180+ MPN coliforms per 100 mL in Ikirun and Ladoja samples) rendered the water unsuitable for direct consumption. The Faculty of Science sample exhibited lower contamination, suggesting that proper maintenance and storage reduce risks. Although the water is generally suitable for agricultural use, contaminants like chromium and phosphate necessitate caution. Recommendations include implementing pre-use treatment methods, improving collection systems, regular water quality monitoring, and public awareness campaigns. These findings underscore the potential of rainwater as a valuable resource while highlighting the importance of treatment to ensure safety. Keywords: Harvest, rainwater, domestic, agriculture
