Abstract
This study examines health or wealth? comparative analysis on newspaper discourse on health and politics: A study of Vanguard and The Guardian (2022-2023), with a focus on comparative difference in regularity, sources, placement and dominant genre in newspaper discourse on health and politics. A content analysis of 112 newspaper articles from two major Nigerian newspapers( Vanguard and The Guardian) reveals Vanguard has regularity of newspaper discourse on health and politics, Vanguard elaborates more on the sources of newspaper discourse on health and politics and The Guardian's Back Page is solely dedicated to politics, contrasting with Vanguard's focus on the Inside Page for all types of content. The study concludes that Vanguard and The Guardian exhibits distinct approaches to covering health and politics in their newspaper discourse. Vanguard demonstrates a consistent and regular focus on both topics, with a more detailed elaboration of sources, indicating a commitment to providing comprehensive information to its readers. In contrast, The Guardian's dedicated Back Page for Politics suggests a more specialised approach, whereas Vanguard's use of the Inside Page for various content types reveals a broader scope. From the findings, the study also recommended that The Guardian and Vanguard should strive for a more balanced to reporting, allocating sufficient space and prominence to health content alongside political coverage. This would enable readers to access a broader range of information and perspectives, ultimately enriching public discourse among others.
