Abstract
This project focused on the isolation and identification of microorganisms from various water sources in BOUESTI hostels. Water samples were collected from five different sources: Hall-A well, Hall-B storex, Hall-E borehole, Hall-C storex, and the Alumni well. The isolation was carried out using nutrient agar, MacConkey agar, potato dextrose agar (PDA), and eosin methylene blue (EMB) agar, and colony morphology observed for preliminary identification. Standard microbiological techniques, including serial dilution, plating, and biochemical testing, were employed to isolate and characterize the microorganisms present. The results revealed the presence of diverse microorganisms, including potential pathogenic and opportunistic species, varying across the sampled sources. The frequency of occurrence of these microorganisms varied, with Escherichia coli being most prevalent in tap water. There may be a need for regular water quality monitoring and adequate treatment to ensure safe water supply for hostel residents.
