Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigates the design, development, and performance analysis of a Savonius wind turbine for small-scale energy generation. A Savonius rotor, known for its drag-based operation and simplicity, was selected for its suitability in low-wind-speed environments. The turbine’s dimensions include a blade height of 250 mm, a diameter of 205 mm, and a curvature optimized to maximize wind capture. Performance testing was conducted with wind speeds up to 10 m/s, where the mechanical power output reached 2.32W. The system was coupled to a 12V DC generator, and real-time measurements of electrical output were taken, with results indicating a maximum electrical efficiency of 61%. The turbine’s ability to operate in varying wind conditions, and its straightforward construction, demonstrate its viability for small-scale, low-cost renewable energy applications. The study also highlights the relationship between the turbine’s curvature, wind velocity, and power generation, providing insight into its operational efficiency and potential for further optimization.
