Abstract
The effects of petroleum products (crude oil and diesel) on the growth of soybean (Glycine max) was studied. Soils contained in polythene bags were treated with different concentrations of the above petroleum products ranging from Oml to 20ml. Soybean seeds that have been soaked in water for Smins and then in 1% mercuric chloride solution also for 5mins were planted in the treated soils and allowed to germinate. These were studied along with controlled experiments. The result of the research indicated that crude oil and diesel produced toxic effects on the soybean seeds during the germination and growth stages. This work also showed that the various concentrations affected germination and growth of the legumeous seeds at different rates and 10ml and 20ml were more toxic than Sml. This indicates that the higher the concentration of the petroleum products that contaminated the soil, the more destructive and inhibitory it becomes to the seeds during its germination, growth and development. Some recommendations were made based on the findings.
