Abstract
This study examined emigration and economic development in Nigeria from 2015-2023. Emigration trends has had detrimental effects on Nigeria's economic development, contributing to fluctuations in GDP growth and highlighting the critical role of human capital in sustaining economic progress. Using Everett Lee's push-pull theory of migration as a theoretical framework, the study surmized that the economy plays a crucial role in shaping migration patterns. This research is guided by two hypotheses: (i) The volume of outbound migration from Nigeria was instigated by rising unemployment rates between 2015-2023 and (ii) The massive departure of Nigerian medical professionals undermined the quality of healthcare within the period under study. Using the documentary method of data collection, existing records, official documents and internet sources are used to validate the hypothesis. This study also examines emigration and economic development in Nigeria using the ex-post facto research design. The findings suggests that addressing the underlying push factors driving emigration, such as unemployment and poor living conditions is essential for stabilizing and enhancing Nigeria's economic development. The study recommends that the government prioritise initiatives that promote economic growth, improve working conditions, creating job opportunities, and providing incentives for healthcare professionals to remain in the country. The government and policymakers should develop strategies to retain human capital and promote sustainable economic development.
