Influence of Skill Acquisition Programs as a Tool for Entrepreneurship Among Graduates of University of Ilorin in Ilorin Metropolis.

Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigated the impact of skill acquisition programs on entrepreneurship among graduates of the University of Ilorin, with the aim of understanding how such initiatives contribute to self-reliance, job creation, and economic development. The main objective was to examine the effectiveness of skill acquisition as a tool for entrepreneurial growth. Specifically, five research questions and four hypotheses were developed to explore the relationship between skill acquisition and entrepreneurial mindset, challenges faced by graduates, and the broader economic implications of entrepreneurship. A descriptive research design was adopted. A stratified random sample of 200 graduates aged 19–33, who had participated in various skill programs (e.g., tailoring, carpentry, ICT), was selected. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including Pearson’s correlation at a 0.05 significance level. Findings revealed that graduates face major barriers such as funding limitations, inadequate mentorship, and insufficient hands-on training (mean > 3.51, SD ≈ 1.00–1.24), yet participation in skill acquisition programs significantly enhanced entrepreneurial mindset and outcomes (mean = 4.33–4.61; r = 0.242–0.625, p < 0.001). These programs were found to be effective in boosting graduates’ confidence, self-employment potential, and economic contributions. The study concludes that skill acquisition programs are vital to reducing unemployment and fostering innovation. It recommends stronger institutional support, improved mentorship, and integration of practical skill training into higher education curricula.
