Abstract
This research examines Gen. Sani Abacha’s regime (1993–1998) in Nigeria, a period marked by political repression alongside targeted economic reform. Under Abacha’s rule, Nigeria saw the curtailment of civil liberties, political suppression, and human rights abuses, while also experiencing economic stabilization amid international sanctions. Abacha’s economic policies, including exchange rate control, interest rate adjustments, and “guided deregulation,” were designed to curb inflation, unemployment, and other economic downturns. His strategic use of oil diplomacy ensured Nigeria’s economic resilience, despite its political isolation. While Abacha’s policies temporarily stabilized Nigeria’s economy, his administration was also marred by extensive corruption, with billions misappropriated. This study provides a balanced assessment of Abacha’s economic strategy and its legacy, revealing the limitations of resource-based policies in achieving sustainable growth. The research concludes by recommending further study on the role of governance, economic diversification, and international partnerships in fostering stability and growth in post-authoritarian Nigeria.
