Physiochemlcal and Microbiological Analysis of Borehole Water in Polytechnic, Hostel Auchi

This study aims to analyze the physiochemical and microbiological analysis of borehole water in Auchi Polytechnic hostel, Auchi. The assessment involves the collection of water samples from the borehole and subsequent analysis for physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters. Microbiological Analysis was carried out using direct plate method and membrane filtration method. Water sample from Auchi Polytechnic hostel, Auchi was collected by grab sampling and analyzed. The pH of the water was 7.9, suspended solid was 0.1, conductivity was 286tls/cm, TDS was 43mg/l and sodium was 0.74mg/l. Heavy metal results for Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd, and Pb are 0.354, 0.102, 0.066, 0.024, 0.008 and 0.011 respectively. The result of microbial analysis was heterotrophic bacteria and fungi count ( cuf/ml). This showed that the water is contaminated wi1h heterotrophic bacteria. The result of the salinity, manganese, and iron falls within WHO standard, while conductivity, turbidity, TSS, TDS, COD, Cr and Pb did not fall within the WHO standard, The result of iron (Fe) which is 0.354 shows that it falls within the WHO standard which is 0.3, while Cr, Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn were not within the WHO standard. The result reveal that Auchi Polytechnic hostel borehole water is not fit for consumption but can however be used for irrigation purpose. Therefore the water should be properly treated before consumption in order to avoid health issues.
