Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of pedagogical approach to the learning of Mathematics in higher institution, a case study of Ondo West Local Government of Ondo State. The study focused on three specific objectives which include: Knowing the effects of students-Centered teaching methods on the mastery of mathematical concept among students of higher institution; comprehending the factors affecting students’ misunderstanding of mathematical concepts among students of higher institution; understanding the challenges which are facing the proper implementation and effectiveness of pedagogical approach to Mathematics learning in higher institutions. This study adopted descriptive research design because it permits the description of variables as they exist in their natural settings. Relevant and clearly stated data were collected by means of well-structured research instrument - questionnaire. The responses of one hundred (100) respondents were subjected to Mean Score and Chi-Square statistical analysis and the findings were discussed where it was found out that the three hypotheses were rejected. The findings showed that there was significant relationship between students-Centered learning and students’ mastery of mathematical concept; there were factors affecting students' understanding of mathematical concepts and there were challenges facing the implementation of students-Centered pedagogical approach to the learning of Mathematics. It was recommended among others that there should be a solid encouragement by the teachers to students to imbibe in active participation and hands-on learning experiences to enhance understanding and retention of mathematical concepts; lecturers are to emphasize conceptual understanding over rote memorization and there should be a cooperative collaboration and peer interaction to facilitate learning as this will allow students to explain concept to each other, articulate their reasoning, and learn from their peers’ perspectives.
