Utilization of Social Media for Academic Activities in Tertiary Institutions (case Studyoffederal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State)

Abstract This study focused on "utilization of social media for academie activities in tertiaryinstitutions". Case study of Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State. Descriptive surveyresearch design was used for the study. The population for the study comprised 112 ND L,126 ND II, 145 HND I and 115 HND II (2023/2024 academic session) Office Technologyand Management students from the case study. Fifty (50) students were selected from eachlevel in Department of Office Technology and Management. The total sampling selected was200 OTM students of Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State. Three (3) research questionsguided the study: (1) To what extent do students utilize Whatsapp for academic activities intertiary institutions? (2) To what extent do students utilize Facebook for academic activitiesin tertiary institutions? (3) To what extent do students utilize Twitter for academic activitiesin tertiary institutions? Questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection from therespondents. Data collected was analysed using simple mean method. Based on the findings,the study concluded that using social media site such as Whatsapp, Facebook and Twitter ineducationally relevant ways can increase student's engagement and academic performance.It was recommended that Office Technology and Management students should create abalance between Facebook chart and academic activities, rather more attention should bedirected to research.
