Abstract
ABSTRACT Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) represent a major public health issue, particularly among young adults, where they can lead to malnutrition, anemia, and impaired cognitive development, ultimately affecting academic performance and overall health. This study aims to assess the prevalence of STH infections among university undergraduates. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 115 students, selected through multi-stage sampling. Stool samples were collected and analyzed for STH eggs using microscopy. In addition, questionnaires were used to gather data on demographics, hygiene practices, and knowledge of STH prevention. The study revealed an overall STH infection prevalence of [76.5%] among participants, with higher rates observed in males students. Significant associations were found between STH infections and factors including poor hygiene practices, limited access to clean water and sanitation, and insufficient knowledge of STH prevention. The findings underscore the need for targeted public health interventions in university communities, including health education campaigns, improved water and sanitation infrastructure, and regular deworming programs. By addressing these issues, universities can contribute to the health, well-being, and academic success of their students.
