Social Variables and Academic Achievement of Senior Secondary School Students in Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

Abstract

ABSTRACT The main purpose of the study was to examine the influence of social variables on academic achievement in mathematics among secondary school students in Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. To achieve the purpose of this study; three research questions were raised to guide the study, three hypotheses were formulated to direct the study. Available literatures were reviewed according to the variable under review; survey research design was adopted for this study and a sample of two hundred (200) respondents were randomly selected from ten sample schools. Social Variable and Academic Achievement Questionnaire, was developed by the researcher, sampled in schools and scored. To test the hypotheses and ascertain whether to reject or retain the hypotheses, One-way ANOVA statistical tool was adopted and all the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the analysis revealed that parental income. religious background, and gender has a significant influence on academic achievement in mathematics. Based on the findings of the study it was recommended among others, parents should endeavor to provide all resources needed for their children to strive in school.
