The Prevalance of Soil Transmitted Helminths Among Undergraduate Students

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) are a group of parasitic worms that pose a significant public health challenge, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. This study investigates the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths among undergraduates of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science, and Technology, Ikere Ekiti, Ekiti State. The study aims to assess the extent of STH infections, contributing factors, and implications for students' health and academic performance. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving stool sample analysis of undergraduate students using standard parasitological techniques, including direct smear and concentration methods. Demographic and behavioral data were collected through structured questionnaires to identify potential risk factors such as personal hygiene, environmental sanitation, and awareness of STH infections. Preliminary results revealed the overall prevalence of STH infection was higher in males (77.8%) than in females (63.6%), however there was no significant difference in the prevalence of infection between the two sexes. Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworms being the most commonly identified helminths. Risk factors significantly associated with STH infections included poor handwashing practices, consumption of unwashed vegetables, and lack of footwear in contaminated environments. The findings highlight the need for targeted health education programs, improved sanitation infrastructure, and periodic deworming campaigns among university students. These interventions are essential to mitigate the health burden of STHs and promote a conducive learning environment.
