Influence of School Environment on the Academic Performance of Students in Secondary Schools in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The study investigated the Influence of school environment on academic performance of secondary school students in Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu state. Four research questions guided the study. The study employed the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study consisted of 1,984 senior secondary class two (SS2) students in all the Sixteen (16) secondary schools in Udenu Local Government Area. Simple random sampling procedure was used to draw 20 students from Ten (10) schools in Udenu Local Government Area. The self-structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Data collected for research questions were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean. The results showed that Overcrowded classrooms, dilapidated classroom, appropriate size for the classroom with adequate space for student population influence academic performance of students in Udenu Local Government Area; adequate resources in library with academic materials, improvisation of instructional materials, and adequate provision of other Instructional materials encourage students and teachers to be more creative, innovative, original and contribute to good academic performance; laboratory equipment, science Specimens, desk and chairs in the laboratory, teaching aids, blackboards for laboratory among others influence academic performances of students in Udenu Local Government Area; and, it also revealed that teachers’ inability to have access to materials for teaching and insufficient qualified teachers due to school location are the major areas that greatly affect the academic performance of students of public secondary schools, with regard to school location. Based on the findings of the study, implications of the findings were noted, recommendation and suggestions for further studies were made.
