Assessing the Causes, Types and Patterns of Social Problems in Higher Institution in Kano State: a Case Study of Northwest University, Kano

ABSTRACT Social problems in higher institutions of learning have become a significant concern, affecting students' academic performance, social interactions, and overall institutional development. This study aims to assess the causes, types, and patterns of social problems in higher institutions in Kano State, with a specific focus on Northwest University, Kano. The research explores the various social issues prevalent among students, including drug abuse, cultism, examination malpractice, sexual harassment, peer pressure, and financial difficulties. The study adopts a qualitative and quantitative research approach, utilizing surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions to collect data from students, lecturers, and administrative staff. The research seeks to identify the underlying causes of these social problems, examine their patterns, and assess their impact on students and the learning environment. Furthermore, the study evaluates the institutional responses and measures put in place to address these challenges. Findings from this research will provide valuable insights into the root causes and recurring trends of social issues within Northwest University, Kano. The study will also offer policy recommendations to university administrators, government agencies, and stakeholders to mitigate social problems and create a safer, more conducive learning environment for students.
