Benefits of Exercise Among Pregnant Women in Ekiti State

Abstract
ABSTRACT This study examines the benefits of exercise among pregnant women in Ekiti state. Three research questions were raised and three research hypotheses were formulated for this study. Descriptive research design was used. The population comprised all teachers who are mothers in Ado Local Government, Area in Ekiti state. One hundred (100) respondents who were selected using simple random sampling technique from Five (5) secondary schools in Ado Local Government Area. Self-constructed instrument was used to collect the data for the study. Face and content validity were ensured by the researcher’s supervisor. Test-retest method of ensuring reliability was used. The reliability coefficient of 0.78 was measured. simple percentage and frequency counts were employed. The result revealed that regular exercise during pregnancy helps to control blood sugar levels, engaging in physical activity during pregnancy reduces the likelihood of developing gestational diabetes mellitus. The result revealed that women who did not exercise before pregnancy should not start during pregnancy, high-intensity exercises are unsafe for all pregnant women, pregnant women should avoid lifting their weights during exercise, exercise during pregnancy caused preterm labour. Based on the findings, it was recommended that pregnant women should be encouraged to engage in safe and beneficial exercises such as walking, yoga, stretching, and water aerobics to enhance their well-being and prepare for childbirth. Husbands, family members, and caregivers should be educated on the importance of exercise during pregnancy. Their support can encourage pregnant women to stay active and consistent in their physical activities. The government and healthcare institutions should organize awareness programmes to educate pregnant women on the benefits of exercise during pregnancy. These campaigns should address cultural misconceptions and fears surrounding physical activity. Healthcare professionals should incorporate exercise recommendations into routine antenatal care. Midwives and obstetricians should provide personalized guidance on safe and appropriate exercises for expectant mothers..
