Abstract
With the recent advancement in technology in offshore energy production, oil, and gas exploration, the demand for mooring systems that can withstand the harsh environmental condition of installation with durability and reliability and yet cost effective has becomes a matter of urgent address. In this study, a model design of a FOWT platform equipped with an NREL 5MW wind turbine was numerically tested under wind and wave load condition while satisfying the Metocean data for analysing the hydrodynamic performance and the stability of the FOWT platform. The model platform was designed on SolidWorks and numerical results were obtained and analysed on ANSYS AQWA. The model design was based on a 1:100 scale with the turbine scaled in same proportion. Two important load cases, maximum operating sea state (MOSS) and extreme sea state (ESS) from the Metocean data was used to analyse the performance of the mooring system. A wave seed number was used to design the irregular wave to obtain a close result as obtained in the field. The mooring systems response and tensions were recorded alongside the optimized and cost-effective design. This study is in direct compliance with the BV and ABS classification society for the standard of setting the anchor tension and line pretension.
