Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus has emerged over the past several decades as a leading cause of nosocomial infections. In recent years, strains of this bacterium which are resistant against several types of antibiotics have evolved and their prevalence is becoming a potential epidemiological threat. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of the most successful modern pathogens. This organism which lives as a commensal, is transmitted in both health-care and community settings, is a leading cause of bacteraemia, endocarditis, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections and hospital-acquired infections. Successful treatment remains challenging and requires the evaluation of both novel antimicrobials and adjunctive aspects of care, such as infectious disease consultation, echocardiography and source control. As there are limited data available on antibiotic resistance patterns of S. aureus that are isolated from students, this study was undertaken with the sole aim of been to isolate Oxacillin and Cefoxitin resistant Staphylococcus aureus in urine sample of male and female students living in Federal Polytechnic Ede halls of residence. MRSA was isolated from all the student’s urine samples and most isolates shows resistance to Oxacillin and Cefoxitin among the male, 20% and 60% respectively, while non-was resistant to cefoxitin in the female student, but 20% Oxacillin resistance was observed.
