Abstract
Land use/land cover is an important area of study in order to evaluate the changes that a particular area is experiencing environmentally. This study is focused on the application of remotely sensed multispectral electromagnetic data to evaluate the land use/land cover of Ovia North East, Edo state. Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) thermal infrared satellite data was used in this study to estimate the land use/land cover of Ovia North East, Edo state for the period of 2014 to 2022. Images were downloaded from the USGS Earth Explorer web application for dry season only within the period of 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2022. Image processing to estimate the land use/land cover was done using the ArcGIS 10.7.1software. The results from the study revealed that Land cover/Land use maps that were generated shows that the percentage area of agriculture, forest and vegetation was about 27%, 35% and 21% respectively in the year 2014 while in the year 2022, the percentage area was about 13%, 12% and 41% for agriculture, forest and vegetation respectively. From the analysis made, it is seen that there was an increase in deforestation in the year 2022 compared to the year 2014 seeing that the percentage area of the bare earth increased from about 10% to 23%.
