Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the effect of fruit extract of Punica granatum and Vitamin C on urea, creatinine and bilirubin level of obese Alzheimer induced Wistar rats.Mature Punica granatum (pomegranate) fruit were obtained from spar Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. Thirty male wister rats weighing (90-150g) were obtained from the Department. The rats were divided into 5 study groups of 6 rats each and treated. Obesity was induced by feeding the experimental animals (except the control) with a formulated High-fat-diet (HFD) and water ad libium for 4weeks. Alzheimer's diseases was induced by oral administration of 175mg/kg body weight of aluminum Chloride (AlCl) except for the normal control group (NC) for 20days. Blood samples were collected, and serum urea, creatinine, and bilirubin levels were measured. The results showed a significant increase in urea, creatinine, and bilirubin levels in the ALZ control group compared to the control group. However, treatment with pomegranate fruit extract and Vitamin C significantly reduced urea and creatinine levels. In conclusion, pomegranate fruit extract and Vitamin C supplementation may reduce urea, creatinine, and bilirubin levels in induced obese ALZ Wistar rats. However, further studies are required to determine the mechanisms underlying these effects.
