Teacher-Student Ratio as a Correlate of Acquisition of Knowledge Among History Students in Imo State University, Owerri, Imo State.

Abstract
This research work investigated teacher-student ratio as correlate to acquisition of knowledge among history students in Imo State University. The research design adopted for this study is the correlation research design. The population of the study is 147 students in Education/History in the Department of Arts Education in the Faculty of Education, Imo State University, Owerri. The sample size for the study is 147 students, a consensus approach was used due to the small population. The instrument for data collection was a researcher-constructed rating scale titled “teacher-student ratio as correlate of acquisition of knowledge among history students Rating Scale”(TSRCAKHSRS). The reliability of the instrument is established with the use of test-retest of Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and a reliability index of 0.72 was realized. The findings of the study revealed that there is a strong positive relationship between teacher student ratio and student’s understanding of subject matter, ability to comprehend history, students interest in learning process and participation in classroom activities among history students in Imo State University. The researcher recommended among other things that the government should ensure that adequate number of qualified history lecturers are employed, so as to ensure that the required teacher-student ratio is maintained.
