Abstract
Cola lepidota, or Monkey Cola, is a plant with a variety of therapeutic benefits. This study sought to identify the extract’s bioactive components and examine their potential impact on important biochemical markers of kidney function such as urea, creatinine, total bilirubin, and direct bilirubin. The phytochemical examination confirmed the presence of a number of chemicals known to contribute to the therapeutic characteristics of medicinal plants, including tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and phenols. The study utilized four groups of male Wistar rats, with three groups receiving varied amounts of the ethanol stem bark extract and one serving as a control. Biochemical investigation revealed substantial differences in renal function markers among the groups. The extract had a dose-dependent influence on urea and creatinine levels, indicating that it could be nephroprotective or nephrotoxic at specific dosages. The findings indicate that the ethanol stem bark extract of Cola lepidota may have medical potential, but more research is needed to properly understand its safety and usefulness in treating kidney-related conditions.
