A Critical Assessment of the Prevalence of Cultism in Nigerian Universities; a Study of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam Campus

Cultism has long plagued Nigerian universities, fostering an atmosphere of fear, intimidation, and violence. This study critically assesses the prevalence of cultism within the context of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University in Igbariam, Anambra State. Through thorough examination and analysis, this research delves into the complex web of factors contributing or promoting the expansion of cult activities within the university campus. Drawing from a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the study investigates the root causes behind the rise of cultism, exploring socio-economic, cultural, and institutional factors that fuels its growth. Utilizing surveys, interviews, and documentary analysis, the research seeks to unravel the underlying motivations driving students to join cult groups, as well as the strategies employed by these groups to recruit and retain members. Furthermore, the study examines the impact of cultism on academic performance, student safety, and the overall campus environment. By assessing the prevalence of violent clashes, extortion, and intimidation tactics perpetrated by cult groups, the research sheds light on the profound consequences of cult activities on the university community. Moreover, the study evaluates existing institutional responses to cultism, scrutinizing the effectiveness of policies, disciplinary measures, and campus security initiatives in addressing the menace.
