Social Media Competencies Required of Secretaries for Effective Office Management in Educational Institutions (case Study of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree and Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke, Osun State)

Abstract This research work focused on Social Media competencies required of secretaries for effective office management in educational institutions (case study of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree and Osun State College Of Technology, Esa Oke Osun State). The population of the study comprised Sixty-two (62) secretaries and the researcher studied the whole population because of the manageable size. Four research questions guided the study: (1) What are the facebook competencies required of secretaries for effective office management in educational institutions? (2) What are the whatsapp competencies required of secretaries for effective office management in educational institutions? (3) What are the twitter competencies required of secretaries for effective office management in educational institutions? (4) What are the skype competencies required of secretaries for effective office management in educational institutions? The research instrument used was a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using simple mean method, the findings of the study revealed that skype, whatsapp, twitter and facebook has positively helped in improving secretaries in educational institution. It was concluded that social media competencies is highly required of secretaries for effective office management and it paved way for better communication and interaction among the secretaries and bosses. The study recommends that secretaries should always imbibe the spirit of professionalism when using social media, and avoid discussing official issues on personal social site.
