Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigates the Fertility Status of Soils Supporting Cassava Production in Government Farms in Abak, Akwa Ibom State. Soil samples were randomly collected from 2 cassava farms and soil management practices on the farm were also recorded. The samples were analyzed for physical and chemical properties. The pH ranged from 4.33-5.40 with a mean of 4.94. The pH of soils evaluated were rated as strongly to moderately acidic. Organic carbon ranges from 0.38 to 1.36 g/kg with a mean of 0.73±40.17 while organic matter ranged from 0.06 to 2.35 with a mean of 1.13± 57.22, the results are lowly varied in AKADEP farm while in CRBDA, Total nitrogen also varied from 0.04 to 0.13 g/kg with a mean of 0.07±37.74 g/kg. Total nitrogen is originally low in this location but it shows an increase as the fallow age increases, which encourages natural fallow system. The results for the different soils were highly varied. Available phosphorus ranges from 29.58 to 38.75 mg/kg with a mean of 34.17±9.24 mg/kg. Further studies in calibrating the response of cassava under balanced fertilization containing macro and micro nutrients are needed.
