Abstract
This research work investigates the impact of poverty on the academic performance of secondary school students in Nasarawa LGA, Kano State, Nigeria. Poverty has remained a major social and economic problem in Nigeria, and its effects extend to the educational sector. The study examined how poverty affects students’ school attendance, access to learning materials, concentration in class, nutrition, and overall academic performance. A descriptive survey research design was used, and data was collected through questionnaires administered to students and teachers from selected secondary schools in Kano State. The findings revealed that poverty has a significant negative effect on students’ academic performance as it leads to absenteeism, poor concentration, low motivation, and lack of educational support. The study recommends that government should provide educational support programs, scholarships, feeding schemes, and poverty alleviation initiatives for students from low-income families to improve academic success.
