Developmental Role of Local Government in Nigeria (a Case Study of Akoko Edo Local Government Area, Edo State)

Abstract
This study is an attempt to find out the development role of local government in Nigeria with particular reference to Akoko Edo local government. The development role of local government is concerned with the issue of better life and provision of good infrastructural facilities to promote growth and development. Local government is that tier of government closest to the people which is vested with certain power to exercise control of the affairs of people in its domain. References were made to some roles of government. Based on the findings of the study, conclusion were been made. The methodology used in this research is both primary and secondary source of data collection. Recommendations were made which will help the various communities to benefit evenly from their various social services provision and that development control should be the sole responsibility of local government councils in their area of jurisdiction.
