Abstract
This study examines the implication of the abuse of mobile phones and social media addiction on the academic perforтапсе of students on social studies in Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo. There was general introduction which led to.rationalefor the study, three (2) research quesions were raised to guide the study. Literatures were reviewed under the Jblowing: theoretical jramework, concept of social media, social media addiction, academic performance, сопсерt o[ social studies, categorization of social media, characteristics of social media, social medla addiction and types, implication of social media addiction on students’ academic Performance and summary of lerature review. Descriptive research designed was adopted, population of the study comprises of one hundred (100) Social studies students oj Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo. Questionnaire was drafed to elicit information from respondents. The sample size consists of one hundred (100) students. Mean and standard deviation were used to determine negatve and posiive opinion of respondents towards implication of social media addiction on the academic performance. Based on the results of the research work, it was discovered that student were addicted to social media and it has influence on their academic performance because addiction to online social nerworks is a problematic lssue that affects students academic llfe; Social studies student were not ехposed to following social media nerwork Facebook, Twitter, WhatsАрр, Wikipedia, Telegram, Tiktok and YоuTubе because the use of social media nerwork distract them and has negative effect on their perfоrтаnсе; use of social media of Social studies studenls improved their academic performance by improved sudents academic performance. Recommendaions were made which includes students should be educaled on lhe infuence of Social media on their academic performance through students orientation programme, students should be monitored by monitoring committe on how lhey use these social nerwork sies in order to avoid distraction, lecturers should ensure they use the social media as a tool to improve the academic performance of students in schools.
