Automated Accounting and Payroll Preparation in Some Selected Large Organisations in Rivers State

Abstract
This study examined the relationship between automated accounting system and payroll preparation in some selected large organizations in Rivers State. The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between cost accounting and wages in selected, cost accounting and benefits, financial accounting and wages, financial accounting and benefits in selected large organizations in Rivers State. The research is anchored on Information theory and Diffusion of Innovation Theory. The study adopts cost accounting and financial accounting as dimensions of automated accounting system while wages and benefits as measures of payroll preparation. The researcher adopted a descriptive survey design approach. The population of the study consisted of 110 staffs and five (5) large organizations in Rivers State, while a sample size of eighty-six (86) was derived from the target population using Tara Yamene technique for sample size determination. Primary data were collected from five (5) Likert-scale questionnaires, personal interviews and observation. The data were analyzed using tables, simple percentages, mean, standard deviation, Excel spreadsheet while hypothesis were tested using Pearson Correlation Coefficient (r) and T-test. The findings indicate a significant relationship between cost accounting and benefits, and a notable lack of significant relationship between financial accounting and wages. Moreover, a strong negative relationship between financial accounting and benefits was revealed. It was recommended among others that Using automated accounting systems, organizations should review and potentially redesign their payroll (benefits, wages and reward) systems to ensure they effectively motivate employees and enhance job performance thereby reducing fraud.
