Abstract
This study focused on the development of a parboiled paddy rice dryer to address the challenges faced by small-scale rice farmers in Nigeria. The traditional sun-drying method commonly used by these farmers exposes the rice to contamination and weather-dependent delays. The developed dryer incorporates locally available materials and consists of key components including a drying chamber, blower fan, air heating chamber, and tilting mechanism. The drying chamber was constructed using stainless steel to prevent rust and corrosion, while the frame was built with angle bars for structural support. The dryer features a tilting mechanism that allows for easy discharge of dried paddy at a 40-degree angle. While the fabrication was successfully completed at a total cost of ₦282,300, further performance evaluation is recommended to determine optimal operating conditions. This innovation aims to enhance the quality and efficiency of local rice production while remaining financially accessible to small-scale farmers.
