Assessment of Rape Incidents and Reporting Among Female Adolescents of Oyi Local Government Area

Abstract
ABSTRACT The study examined rape incidents and reporting among female adolescents of Oyi Local Government Area. The study adopted four research questions and four research objectives. The specific objectives are; to ascertain the rate of rape among female adolescents in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, to know the causes of rape among female adolescents in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, to find out the impact of poverty on the rate of rape among female adolescents in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State and to determine the effects of rape on female adolescents in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State. The study adopted Feminism theory and Integration theory as the theoretical framework of the study. The study employed survey design as the research design and stratified random as the sampling technique. The population of the study was 239,700, while the sample size was 399. Findings from the study revealed that rape abuse is perpetrated mostly by male friends and older male. The study concludes that most incidences of rape occurred in the perpetrators houses and many victims did not report the incidence. The study recommends that parents should establish a good relationship with their children and always educate them on sexual abuse from younger age to be able to identify exploitative relationship and speak out if things are going wrong. In addition, Health education strategies such as public enlightenment through mass media, rape awareness campaign and life building skills are needed to address knowledge about rape and improve perception on rape.
