Design and Implementation of Network Security (a Case Study of Uba Enugu)

Network security is paramount for organizations, particularly financial institutions like United Bank for Africa (UBA) in Enugu, Nigeria, where sensitive customer data and financial transactions are at stake. Historically, UBA Enugu has relied on manual network security processes, including basic firewall configurations, rudimentary password systems, and periodic log reviews conducted by IT staff. These methods, while functional, are prone to human error, slow response times, and vulnerabilities that modern cyber threats—such as phishing, malware, and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks—can exploit. This project focuses on the design and implementation of a comprehensive, automated network security system tailored to UBA Enugu’s operational needs, aiming to enhance protection, streamline processes, and mitigate risks effectively. The study begins with a thorough analysis of UBA Enugu’s existing network infrastructure, identifying critical weaknesses such as outdated firewall rules, lack of real-time intrusion detection, and insufficient encryption for online banking transactions. The implementation phase involves configuring these tools within UBA Enugu’s network environment, ensuring compatibility with existing hardware and software while minimizing disruptions to banking operations. Staff training programs are also developed to equip IT personnel with the skills to manage and maintain the new system.
