Anti Anemic Potential of Aqueous Leaf Extract of Ipomoea Batatas on Phenylhydrazine Induced Albino Wister Rats

ABSTRACT Anemia is a prevalent hematological disorder characterized by a reduction in red blood cells or hemoglobin levels, leading to decreased oxygen-carrying capacity in the blood. This study aims to evaluate the potential of Ipomoea batatas leaf extract in ameliorating phenylhydrazineinduced anemia in albino Wistar rats. The objective is to assess the haematological parameter (packed cell volume.) in Phenylhydrazine-induced anemic albino Wister rats, to determine the efficacy of the extract at various doses, to compare the efficacy of the leaf aqueous extract with a standard drug. The results of the study showed that phenylhydrazine caused a significant decrease in red blood cell count and hemoglobin levels in the rats, indicating the induction of anemia. However, treatment with the aqueous leaf extract of Ipomoea batatas reversed these : effects, leading to a significant increase in red blood cell count and hemoglobin levels in the treated groups compared to the phenylhydrazine-induced group. In conclusion, the findings of this study suggest that the aqueous leaf extract of Ipomoea batatas has potential anti-anemic effects on phen: lhydrazine-induced anemia in albino Wister rats. Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of action and to explore the potential therapeutic applications of this natural remedy in the treatment of anemia.
