Abstract
This study examined the awareness of the benefits of solar energy among small-scale business operators in Benin metropolis. The research aimed to determine the level of awareness, usage, and challenges faced by small-scale business owners in adopting solar energy as an alternative power source. A sample size of 100 respondents was selected using a purposive random sampling technique to ensure representation from various business sectors within the metropolis. The research instrument, a structured questionnaire titled "Awareness of Solar Energy Potentials Questionnaire (ASEPQ)", was employed to gather data on respondents’ awareness levels and adoption challenges. The instrument had a reliability score of 0.791, confirming its internal consistency. Four research questions guided the study: assessing the level of awareness, extent of usage, challenges in adopting solar energy, and factors influencing awareness levels. Findings revealed that small-scale business operators have a high level of awareness of solar energy’s benefits, particularly in terms of cost savings, reliability, and sustainability. However, challenges such as high initial installation costs and lack of technical knowledge were identified as significant barriers to adoption. Based on the findings, the study recommends that public and private stakeholders initiate awareness campaigns to further educate business operators on the economic and environmental advantages of solar energy. Additionally, affordable financing options such as grants and loans should be introduced to mitigate the high cost of adoption. Policymakers are encouraged to provide tax reliefs and improve infrastructure to enhance accessibility. Lastly, training programs should be developed to equip business owners with technical knowledge on solar energy systems, ensuring efficient utilization and sustainability.
