Survey of Algal Flora Present in Water Tanks of Bayero University Kano (buk) New Campus, Females’ Hostel

ABSTRACT This research project aim to survey the algal flora of reservoir tanks in Ramat females' hostel, Bayero University Kano and also to assess the physicochemical parameters of water in the reservoir tanks.the study identify the presence of variety of algal species including spirogyra,Nostoc and oscillatoria,the samples of water was centrifuge at 1500rpm via a test tube for 15minutes and the bottom layer was transferred into a glass slide and was examine via a microscope,an identification guide was used to identify the algal species.assessment of the physicochemical parameters such as temperature,pH, turbidity,DO,BOD,EC,nitrate and phosphate was done via their various meters,the pH was determined using a digital pH meter (WAGTECH Model),and other parameters were determined using their various meters.from the findings,all the physicochemical parameters are within the standard provided by WHO/NAFDAC 2010, except for pH in tank Bwhich has a mean value of 5.5 indicating that the water is slightly acidic.A test of significant difference was also conducted and there is only significant difference in pH between the two tanks while others did not indicate significant difference.Further research and monitoring effort are recommended to better understand the dynamics of algal populations in reservoir tanks and their impact on the surrounding ecosystem.
