Assessment of Road Transport Problems in Calabar South Local Government Area, Cross River State

Abstract
Transportation is an important part of human activity. It forms the basis of all socioeconomic interactions. In many developing countries, lack of transport facilities often hinders economic development. A good transport system is essential to support economic growth and development, it is in the light of this that the study seek to assess road transport problems in Calabar South Local Government Area. It was aimed at Identifying road transport problem in Calabar South, spot or map location where road transport problem is situated, identifies the causes of road transport problems and proffer sustainable solutions on road transport problem. To achieve the above objectives, the research made use of the survey design, with the simple random sampling techniques to randomly select 399 respondents with the aids of Taro Yamane formula. The research made use of primary data collected through the administration of questionnaire. The data collected were presented and analyzed using the simple regression model with the aids of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Based on the analysis, it was found out that the causes of road transport problem do not have significant effect in Calabar South, that the implication of road transport problem does not have significant effect in Calabar South. In the light of the above, the study recommended among others that Calabar South Local Government should build good and durable roads, and there should always be a good maintenance culture and improvements of the already existing roads. Also areas that are not accessible should be connected to nearby roads. This will facilitate and ease movements of vehicles and increase frequent movement; it will also reduce the high cost of transportation.
