Implementation of Safety Practices in Biology Laboratory Among Senior Secondary School Students in Irepodun/ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti, Ekiti State

Abstract

This study examined the implementation of safety practices in biology laboratories among senior secondary school students in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Nigeria. Using a descriptive survey design, 100 students from five schools were surveyed via structured questionnaires to assess compliance with safety protocols, identify challenges, and explore gender differences. Results revealed that while students had a basic understanding of safety practices, implementation was inconsistent, with significant gaps in areas such as the use of personal protective equipment and proper labeling and storage of chemicals. The study concluded that inadequate training, insufficient safety equipment, and overcrowded laboratories were major obstacles to effective safety practice implementation. Recommendations included enhancing communication and education on safety protocols, improving availability and use of safety equipment, addressing infrastructure and resource limitations, strengthening supervision and enforcement mechanisms, and providing targeted training to address gender differences, ultimately aiming to foster a safer and more conducive learning environment for all students.
