Locational Implications of Informal Motor on Traffic Flow in Ikot Ekpene Urban Area

Abstract

This study set out to investigate and analyze the factors that contribute to traffic congestion in Ikot Ekpene urban and their consequences, with the view to propose appropriate intervention measures to this problem. The study examined the locational effects of the informal Motor Parks and its contribution to traffic congestion in Ikot Ekpene urban, and planning interventions to improve traffic flow in the whole area. The major findings of the study were that the causes of traffic congestion in Ikot Ekpene urban included:, poor management by task force personnel from ministry of transport, lack of designated Motor Parks, vehicles parking, loading and unloading at unauthorized points of the road, indiscipline vehicle operators, inadequate road space, no parking area for vehicles. The effects of the traffic congestion included; a lot of time spent on the road during travel, high risks of insecurity, ease of crossing the road by the pedestrians and maneuvering by the hawkers among others. The major recommendations from this study included; efficiently designing road networks with adequate provision of Motor Park facilities, efficiently instituting traffic management authorities and tools, efficient provision of designated Motor Parks.
