Abstract
This project was designed to ascertain a comparative assessment of the factors contributing to student poor academic performance at school level and board level in School Of Health Information Management, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex Ile Ife , And Health Information Management department, College Of Health Technology, Ilesa.. The specific objectives are: to assess the knowledge of students on poor academic performance at the school level and board level, to identify the factors that contribute to or cause students' poor academic performance at the school level and board, to determine the impact of poor student academics performance on teaching pedagogical approaches at the school level and board level and to determine the evaluation methods of academic’s performance in comparison with the board standards. This study utilized a descriptive survey design and a structured questionnaire method to gather information from 258 students from two schools using proportionate sampling techniques. 258 questionnaires were distributed and 258 were retrieved back for analyses making up 100% response rate. The findings revealed that 78.7% of respondents believed inadequate academic performance significantly impacts students' educational progress. It also indicated that 74% of the respondents perceived that a lack of interest in the HIM profession and Inadequate teaching methods and instructional materials are the major issues and factors contributing to the poor academic performance of students. However, findings revealed that the encouragement for teachers to use a variety of assessment strategies to measure understanding and progress is reinforced by majority of the broad consensus on the need for comprehensive assessment techniques in education. Moreover, there are areas of concern regarding the consistency of exam durations with Health Record Officer's Registration Board of Nigeria standards, with only a minority of the respondents supporting this, this disparity suggests a need for greater attention to ensuring uniformity in exam time allocation across courses and assessments. The regression analysis indicates a moderate positive relationship, where teaching methodology is the strongest predictor, while evaluation methods and student knowledge have smaller effects. The findings demonstrate the significance and reliability of the teaching approach and assessment practices in forecasting the dependent variable. The study concluded that there are various factors that contribute to poor academic performance among HIM students, including lack of interest, insufficient teaching resources. Addressing these challenges requires a holistic approach that encompasses enhanced teaching methodologies, differentiated instructional strategies, and comprehensive student support systems. Aligning academic standards and assessment practices with professional guidelines is also crucial to ensuring quality education and positive student outcomes in the HIM field. Based on the findings the following recommendations were made :Implement comprehensive and diversified assessment strategies to accurately evaluate student progress and provide meaningful feedback, Strengthen the monitoring and feedback mechanisms to identify and address any inconsistencies or gaps in the implementation of HRORBN standards and also Implement evidence-based pedagogical strategies and teaching methodologies to enhance student engagement and learning.
