Abstract
This study was aimed at investigating the inhibition of dehydrogenase activity of Laurus nobilis and Sesamum indicum ethanol extracts against Staphylococcus aureus. The microbial isolates were obtained from high vaginal swab from patient. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts were determined using 2,3,5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) as the electron acceptor. Pure cultures of Staphylococcus aureus were exposed to varied concentrations of the extracts [0 – 4000 µg/ml]. The extracts exhibited concentration dependent response against the tested organism. Laurus nobilis achieved the threshold inhibition concentration IC50 at 1987.78 ug/ml while the IC50 of Sesamum indicum was non-determined. The IC100 for both extracts were non-determined. The results of this study showed that both extracts were effective against Staphylococcus aureus, although, Laurus nobilis is more effective against Staphylococus aureus than Sesamum indicum as antimicrobial agent.
