Assessment of the Knowledge, Attitude, and Perception Toward Genetic Counseling Among Primary Health Care Workers in Sokoto Metropolis

Abstract
Genetic counseling is an evolving side of clinical care that helps people to make informed medical and lifestyle decisions. The rapid expansion of genetic knowledge and the implications for healthcare has resulted in an increased role for Primary Care Providers (PCPs) to incorporate genetics into their daily practice. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and perception towards genetic counseling among primary health care workers in Sokoto metropolis. A descriptive research design was adopted for this study. A well-structured questionnaire was adopted as the instrument used for data collection. Multistage sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 155 respondents that participated in this study. Data was analyzed and presented using mean, frequency and percentage distribution. Result of the study revealed that majority of the respondents (86.5%) has a good knowledge on genetic counseling. Also majority of the respondents has a good attitude towards genetic counseling. Majority of the respondents (using an aggregate mean of 4.26) also has a positive perception towards genetic counseling. In conclusion, it was recommended that there was need for increase awareness among the general public and that there was need for incorporation of genetic services into primary health care.
