Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigates the influence of class size on the learning outcomes of secondary school students in Biology in Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State. The primary aim is to explore how class size influence students' academic performance, engagement, and comprehension of Biology concepts. The research adopts a quantitative approach, utilizing data from a sample of secondary schools in the region including both large and small class settings. Academic records, surveys, and classroom observations were employed to gather relevant information on students’ performance, participation, and the quality of teaching. Findings suggest that smaller class sizes are associated with better student outcomes, including higher test scores, greater individual attention from teacher, and increased participation in class activities. In contrast, larger class sizes appeared to negatively affect students’ learning experiences, leading to reduced engagement, lower academic performance, and less effective teaching methods. The study concludes that class size plays a significant role in the educational process, emphasizing the need for policy reforms to optimize class size for better learning outcomes in secondary school Biology education in Ikere Local Government of Area Ekiti State. Recommendations include increasing teacher- student interaction and advocating for a balanced class size to improve educational quality.
