Abstract
The general and foremost objective of this project is to design, construct and carry out a performance evaluation of a dual-charcoal and gas kiln. It is a combination of components that makes possible the use of alternative heat sources. Due to the irregular power supply common in developing countries, as well as the growing high cost of hydrocarbon fuel sources, the need arises for the development of a dual energy source that uses both charcoal and gas for fish smoking. The kiln consists of two divisions, each using distinct energy sources, charcoal and gas. In the charcoal section is a charcoal tray with a compartment for ash collection, the heat from the charcoal is dissipated upwards to the fish trays and circulated with the use of deflectors. On the other hand, cooking gas is supplied to the burner located at the upper segment of the kiln via a threaded pipe connection to a gas cylinder, secured unto a control mechanism that allows the burning rate to be varied progressively and continuously. The performance evaluation of the developed kiln gave 75 % at drying rate of 0.224 kg/hr and 81.50 % at drying rate of 0.29 kg/hr for the charcoal and gas component respectively. The total cost of the dual powered kiln was three hundred and thirteen thousand, one hundred naira (₦313,100) only.
