Abstract
ABSTRACT Access to safe drinking water is essential for public health, yet water quality remains a major concern in many urban areas. This study assesses the physicochemical and microbial properties of drinking water in Bachirawa, a densely populated area of Kano Metropolis. Water samples were collected from various sources, including boreholes, wells, and sachet water, and analyzed using standard laboratory techniques. Physicochemical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, temperature and concentrations of key ions (nitrite, chloride, and heavy metals) were determined using standard method. Microbial analysis focused on the presence of Total coliforms, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi and Vibrio cholerae using culture-based methods. Results were compared with the World Health Organization (WHO). The findings revealed variations in water quality, with some samples exceeding recommended limits for microbial contamination and certain physicochemical parameters. The result showed analysis of variance (one-sample test) of electrical conductivity, chloride & dissolved oxygen to vary significantly (at P
